Dead Cats & Blanks....

'T' arrived.... And accused me of profane, immoral and indecent acts with the cat that was now semi-submerged in a spot out of the wind down the margin to my left, head down with a lung-full of water: that cat reminded me of a song by 'The Verve'. The little blighter had obviously drifted in over night. Possibly responsible for the tweaks that I had been receiving to my rods between 6 and 10pm....

REWIND.

I arrived at the lake, high pressure continuing but.... the sun had been on the pond for a few days and I fancied a peg which receives sun for most of the day. I had been at work so changed out of my suit into my more comfortable carpy clothes. Glasses on, dodgy clip-on's in place (CHIPS have nothing on me) and a lap of the lake to begin with.

The 'normal' spots looked as though they hadn't been fed on in months. Not surprising given the cold winter we have had, but I was kind of hoping that a gleaming spot might just give me an indication of where to start. Climbed a few trees, hoping to find one of the elusive buggers, but the ripple on the water was too heavy for decent clarity. The wind was cold, really cold, so eventually and perhaps grudgingly, opted for the easy option... Closest to the car, in the lee of the wind and a swim that was receiving the last of the early spring sunshine.

Finally got sorted with the rods out, two rods in such perfect positions that any carp with a modicum of sense would venture into these areas and take a liking for an early season snack in the shape of a 'Wootton' Special. The final rod was flicked into the 'abyss' hoping for an 'electric eel' or similar. I cracked open a beer, rolled a fag and watched the water. About an hour in and a couple of Canadian Geese landed. They honked and farted around, clearly agitated by my presence until they flew off in the ever so subtle manner that they adopt (???). The sun was now dipping below the tree-line, the indicators maintained their motion---less.

A car drew up behind me... Mr.P arrived in his jacket and shirt and we reminisced for a while about seasons gone and aspirations for the coming year. Mr. P. left as the frost settled on my brolly. A deer (I think) shot out from the undergrowth to my left and traversed the path for a hundred yards or so, noisy in the stillness and silence that twilight brings. I cursed it silently as one of my baits had been placed close in...

I cooked up a meal, a rarity for me when doing over-nighters, a couple of pork chops, potatoes and peas washed down with another beer. Very still and cold and clear. Orion bright in the sky. No shooting stars. I huddled into the bag at about 9.30pm.

I hadn't heard a sound of a fish but a few beeps on the Delkims had promised so much but given so little. Coronary time.

Slept poorly. Kept waking up and at 5am decided to give into wakefulness and make a cup of coffee and welcome in the dawn. As the light grew from the East I became aware of hundreds of circles dimpling the surface of the pond, my confidence grew: the silvers were active, is 'Norman' around?

9am and not a beep. Not a twitch on  the line and no sign of a carp. The daylight breathes life back into the geese and a lone tufty but not the cat which has mysteriously appeared down the margin.

The rest of the day passes in a haze of tea, cigarettes and 'what-ifs'...

'T' arrived.....

Re: Dead Cats & Blanks....

Well I never….
………….The sign of the dead cat....... hasn't happened for many a year; I was hoping the legend was merely fiction……..

I've never mentioned it before, but local folklore has it that a dead cat mysteriously appears in the swim of the next victim of the ‘Bilberry Butcher!!’ The Butcher being the disturbed spirit of a deceased angler, who when alive was known as ‘The Cat’ due to his covert stalking ability.
The cat spent many years of his life in pursuit of one of the pool’s prize fish, a glorious deep bodied Mirror carp, old, wise and with behaviour unlike other carp in other lakes. The Cat tried every trick in the book (and some that aren’t!) trying to temp this carp to pick up his hookbait..........but alas, it was never to be and this enigmatic of all carp defeated the poor chap.
The strain and frustration took its toll on the Cat and over the years his mental health deteriorated, culminating one spring morning when the cat tragically took his own life at the pool.

Folklore proclaims that the Cat re-incarnated into the Bilberry Butcher and re-appears at random intervals in the spring to select a victim, vexed into action in case someone succeeds where he failed; the dead cat in an anglers swim being the portent of forthcoming doom for the next victim!!

So Nick – great bit of writing mate, if you can knock out 250+ pages of similar material and sort me out a couple of signed copies that would be cool; I mean after ‘the Butcher’ has hacked you to pieces your writings would be posthumously worth a bit!!!!

BTW – the only known way to ward of ‘the Butcher’ is to pay the bloody lake warden the dosh you owe him – Hahaha!!!!

Re: Dead Cats & Blanks....

The world continues to spin on its axis, spring turned into summer and still Norman remains uncaught and notable by his absence. I've fished the pool a few times since the dead cat episode and fortunately I have not been butchered by its reincarnation. I even paid the lake warden (to cross the styx)and wondered whether paying my debts might tip karma in my favour. It didn't.

Norman remains as elusive as ever. Mere glimpses of him are all I have been rewarded with... At least he is still alive, unlike many of his companions across our waters and further afield. Talking of the 'mere', today I heard that 'The Black Mirror' has died along with every other fish in 'The Mere'. What a disaster, add to this the demise of 'Two Tone' and 'Heather' in recent months and I begin to wonder whether we are witnessing the apocalyptic end of carp angling as we know it. The threats to our carp stocks are growing on a daily basis and there seems very little we can do about it.

Talking of the 'Black Mirror', did you know that Rashleigh had the most beautiful black mirror swimming around in its waters just a few years ago? It remains the most stunning fish that I have ever had the pleasure to catch. It didn't come out very often... Steve and Nige told me that they had only seen it once since the late 90's. Colon caught her in 200? and I finally managed to catch her in 200?. I had watched that fish scoffing bait back in the snags behind the rope on so many occasions but rarely would she make a mistake in 'open' water. I got accused (along with Ian W) of putting too much bait behind the rope and that this was why no-one was catching! What a joke, how angry was I??? We didn't know then, what we know now. On reflection, all those arguments seem so petty now, we should have been more worried about predation than over-baiting....

The Black mirror hasn't been caught since I had her, she has been consigned to my photo album, a mere memory of something that was and of something that could have been, should have been... That fish had everything: power, grace, finesse and wiliness. Where is it now? I think you know...

So my fellow piscators, raise a glass to those fish that we pursue, because they are just fleeting companions in our angling lives. Will we ever be in a position again where we are able to watch the carp in our lakes grow into adulthood and maturity, where they are given names and treated irreverently? I hope so, I really do, because if this aspect of carp angling dies then surely so does our connection with the past, the present and the hope of a brighter future....
